Bladder dysfunction - is present in up to 37% of stroke patients.
Infection of the urinary tract - is the most frequent infectious complication in stroke patients.
Bronchopneumonia - is the second most frequent infectious complication in stroke patients and is burdened by a high mortality.
Decubital ulcerations - may complicate the clinical course of up to 20% of stroke patients.
Epileptic seizures - may, depending on stroke subtype, appear in 2.5 to 42.8% of cases, while epilepsy varies from 3 to 4% of cases.
Brain oedema - is the main cause of early and late stroke progression, resulting in impairment of every kind of neurological function.
Prospective, multicentre study protocols - on decompressive surgery have been recently developed and are underway. (Malignant MCA Infarcts – 4 Trials)
