Current Controversies In Cardiovascular Protection: Do We Know All There Is To Know?

Boehringer Ingelheim Satellite Symposium at the XXV Annual Congress of the European Society of Cardiology, in Vienna, Austria, 2 September 2003

The European Society of Cardiology plays a major role in the dissemination of knowledge on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and stroke diseases. A unique symposium entitled 'Current controversies on cardiovascular protection: do we know all there is to know?' considered evidence for rethinking approaches to the prevention of cardiovascular and stroke morbidity and mortality. The session, which was attended by other 400 delegates, was chaired by two widely acknowledged experts on cardiovascular disease and its consequences. Professor Hans-Christoph Diener from the University of Essen, Germany, is a world expert on stroke, and Professor Salim Yusuf from the Clinical Trials Research Unit based at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, is a renowned cardiologist and epidemiologist. The faculty also included two internationally recognised experts on hypertension and its treatment - Professor Peter Sleight and Professor Gordon McInnes. The final member of the faculty was Professor Philip Gorelick, an eminent neurologist from United States with a long-standing interest in the role of drugs in stroke. In recent years, all members of this distinguished faculty have made valuable contributions to groundbreaking outcome studies in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.

Boehringer Ingelheim Satellite Symposium at the 12th European Stroke Conference in Valencia, Spain, 22 May 2003

Developments in both acute and secondary prevention treatments for stroke that seem likely to reshape future treatment options and provide a brighter outlook for stroke patients were the subject of the Boehringer Ingelheim satellite symposium at the 12th European Stroke Conference 21-24 May 2003 in Valencia, Spain. Presentations at the satellite symposium considered: the implementation of rt-PA (recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, alteplase, Actilyse®) treatment in Europe; some of the questions raised by recent studies of secondary stroke treatments; and the potential of the new PRoFESS® trial to answer those questions. Professor Werner Hacke, Ruprecht-Karls University, Heidelberg, Germany and Professor Gregory Albers, Stanford University Medical Center, Palo Alto, CA, USA chaired the symposium.

Anticoagulation and Thrombosis

Lowest bleeding risk in secondary stroke prevention
Meta-analysis of nearly 340,000 patients shows superior safety with dipyridamole/low dose aspirin (AGGRENOX/ ASASANTIN RETARD)

According to a meta-analysis presented at the American Heart Association's Annual Meeting, low dose aspirin (ASA) < 100mg and dipyridamole therapy was associated with the lowest bleeding risk when compared with conventional dose ASA > 100mg, platelet glycoprotein Ilb/Illa inhibitors (abciximab, tirofiban, eptifibatide) and thienopyridines (ticlopidine and clopidogrel). The meta-analysis includes data from 50 clinical trials published from 1988 to 2002, with a total of 338,191 patients, to determine bleeding risks associated with antiplatelet agents.
