Stroke prevention
The acute phase is not the only stage of stroke that has to be managed. Prevention of stroke is extremely important, whether it is primary or secondary. This section provides links to websites containing more information on this subject.
Secondary prevention
The risk of having a recurrent stroke increases dramatically after a stroke or transient ischaemic attack. To learn more about the use of Aggrenox® (extended-release dipyridamole + ASA) in the secondary prevention of ischaemic stroke, please go to:
Prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
Pradaxa is a non-vitamin K oral anticoagulant (NOAC) and the only direct thrombin inhibitor for the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
The product website for Pradaxa was developed for healthcare professionals to provide information on clinical trials, patient types, indications and dosing, as well as the latest news and guidance on how to use the dabigatran-specific reversal agent, Praxbind, in emergency situations.

Stroke prevention guidelines
Guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke
In 2014, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) updated the 2011 guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke in individuals who have not previously experienced a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). The guidelines include recommendations for the control of risk factors, interventional approaches to treatments preventing thrombotic and thromboembolic stroke, information on genetic testing as well as recommendations for the prevention of stroke in specific circumstances, including diabetes.

Guidelines for the prevention of stroke in patients with stroke and transient ischaemic attack
The updated American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) guidelines for the prevention of stroke in patients with stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) provides physicians with evidence-based recommendations for the prevention of future stroke and recurrent brain ischaemia among survivors of ischaemic stroke or TIA. The guidelines include recommendations for the control of risk factors, information on antithrombotic and antiplatelet therapy as well as recommendations for the prevention of recurrent stroke in a variety of specific circumstances.
